Sue & Wes Dixon Waterfowl Refuge

Philanthropists Sue and Wes Dixon of Lake Forest were honored by The Wetlands Initiative (TWI) and 200 guests on Saturday, September 17, 2005. The Chicago-based nonprofit organization dedicated the Sue & Wes Dixon Waterfowl Refuge at Hennepin & Hopper Lakes.

“Without the generous support of Sue and Wes Dixon, the Hennepin & Hopper Lakes Restoration Project would never have made it off the drawing board and into the beautiful reality it is today,” said Albert Pyott, TWI’s chairman of the board. “The Dixons were there from the beginning for this project and have consistently been its strongest champions.”

Sue & Wes Dixon are lifelong conservationists and environmentalists. “It is so gratifying to see a project come to fruition within our lifetime,” said Sue Dixon. “You don’t often get to see the results of your contributions to a conservation effort.”

At the dedication, sculptor Jean Greene (photo below, left) unveiled three river otters cast in bronze as a tribute to the Dixons. The presence of real river otters at the restored wetlands is an indication of a healthy aquatic ecosystem, such as at Hennepin & Hopper Lakes.
