It was a rainy day at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie, and dark clouds hung stubbornly over the prairie. An early morning meeting at the visitor's center had brought me down to Wilmington, but now it was midmorning and I had the rest of the day to myself.

Hydration, who knew?

Corey Rios, an intern with the Wetlands Initiative, does restoration work at Midewin in both hot sun and rain. The work also brings discoveries, like this snapping turtle.

As an intern, I've been learning several important ideas while working in the field. But one of the first and most important things I learned – and it should be common sense, but as they say, you must walk before you run – was that hydration is crucial.
