Wetlands are home to an immense variety of species of microbes, plants, insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds, fish, and mammals. The microbes, plants, and wildlife supported by wetland habitats are part of the global cycles for water, nitrogen, and sulphur. The scientific community is beginning to appreciate the contribution of wetlands to atmospheric maintenance.
Wetlands serve as reservoirs for storing carbon in their plant communities and soil. The ability of wetlands to store carbon instead of releasing it into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide helps moderate global climate conditions.
The Wetlands Initiative is dedicated to restoring the wetland resources of the Midwest to improve water quality, increase wildlife habitat and biodiversity, and reduce flood damage.
