Living with Wetlands

Is there a wetland near your home? Have you wondered how to be a good neighbor to this rich ecosystem?

If you answered yes, the Wetlands Initiative 's Living with Wetlands: A Handbook for Homeowners in Northeastern Illinois is for you. This 28-page, full-color book is designed to give you a better understanding of your nearby wetland ecosystems.

Living with Wetlands includes an overview of different wetland habitats, the important services they provide, and existing protections for wetlands. It also offers tips on protecting the wetland you live near, including steps you can take in and around your home, as well as basic management strategies for the wetland itself. The guide includes a resource list for agencies, services, and organizations offering additional information.

The guide was written by Laura Urban, in collaboration with Jerry Paulson. Original illustrations were by Nancy Williamson. Dr. William Mitsch served as technical advisor.

The project was made possible by grants from the Grand Victoria Foundation and Chicago Wilderness. The 2005 printing was  underwritten by Christopher B. Burke Engineering, Ltd.
