Burn Away the Winter Blues: Volunteer Work Day at the Dixon Waterfowl Refuge

  • Sandy Hollow at the Sue and Wes Dixon Waterfowl Refuge 6377 IL-26 Hennepin, IL 61327 United States (map)

Burn away your winter blues with TWI at a volunteer workday at the Dixon Waterfowl Refuge! Working carefully around burn piles, volunteers will help remove logs and woody debris from trees that were recently felled to improve habitat and thin the tree canopy in the Sandy Hollow oak savanna. No experience is needed for this fun restoration activity. Volunteers can expect to walk, bend, and pick up and move logs as part of this activity.

Please note that for safety reasons, management and interaction with the brush pile bonfire will be limited to TWI staff. Everyone will be able to enjoy the warmth of the burn piles, and moving woody debris is a physical activity that is guaranteed to keep you warm! Stick around towards the end of the workday to enjoy hot dogs and baked potatoes cooked over hot coals.

Please dress appropriately for the outdoors. Bring extra layers (preferably made of natural materials like wool and cotton), work gloves, hats, etc., to stay safe and warm. We also recommend wearing warm and water-proof shoes in case of muddy conditions. Restoration areas are easily accessed from public trails.

Snacks and water will be provided and a port-a-john will be on site. This activity is open to children and recommended for ages 8+ with guardian supervision.

Volunteers can park in the Sandy Hollow parking lot at the south end of the Refuge.

Please email twi@wetlands-initiative.org if you plan to attend.
