TWI donors are invited to join our staff for a short tour of some of TWI’s growing list of restoration sites in the Calumet Region. The group tour will stop at Indian Ridge Marsh and Square Marsh in southeast Chicago.
At Indian Ridge Marsh, where TWI has been working since 2016, we will learn about a new shoreline restoration technique that has helped hemi-marsh habitat return to an area that for decades was used to dispose of industrial waste from steelmaking.
At Square Marsh, a newer project of TWI and partners, the tour will showcase early restoration efforts at this remnant of the original Lake Calumet.
Attendees will meet at the Ford Calumet Environmental Center at Big Marsh Park then combine into a few vehicles suitable for a bit of off-roading between sites. At each site, there will be a short walk that may involve wet or muddy conditions, so hiking boots or waterproof shoes are recommended. Long pants, long sleeves, and a hat are recommended since there is little shade at these sites. The event will take place rain or shine, unless thunder and lightning is expected.
This event is free to attend for TWI donors. Space is limited, so we encourage you to RSVP at your earliest convenience. To sign up, please email twi@wetlands-initiative.org. We hope you will join us!
