Saturday Morning Harvest: Volunteer Native Seed Harvest at the Dixon Waterfowl Refuge

  • Sue and Wes Dixon Waterfowl Refuge 9231 Illinois 26 Hennepin, IL, 61327 United States (map)

Fall is seed season at the Dixon Waterfowl Refuge and we’d love your help! Join us on Saturday, September 26, National Public Lands Day, for a family-friendly morning of harvesting native seed by hand at one of the most remarkable places in Illinois.

Once drained and farmed for nearly a century, the Refuge is now a mosaic of backwater lakes, wetlands, prairies, and savannas. Since 20212, it has been a designated Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention. The seed you collect will be cleaned, sorted, and planted in parts of the Refuge still being restored, so your morning helps shape what grows here for years to come!

No experience is needed. Our staff will show you what to collect and provide the tools. We’ll have fall snacks and drinks ready to keep you going.
